Spam is unsolicited, unwanted e-mail showing up in your e-mail account. Getting a ton of spam? There are certain things you can do to defeat the onslaught of unwanted messages. Read further for more information.
- Do not display your e-mail address in public.
- If you do get an unwanted e-mail from a company that you know for sure you neither visited, nor have heard of, do not respond to any unsubscribe attempts. This is a trap and identifies you as a real person behind the e-mail.
- Turn off autoresponses.
- Submit an e-mail address that you have specifically for submitting information to companies.
- Do not forward jokes. These also expose your e-mail address to spammers.
- Be leary of electronic greetings cards. Some are being used to spam from your computer and contact list.
- If you do get spam, report it to the FTC with this e-mail address: uce(at)ftc.gov
